Human Vapor is a 2026 science fiction crime thriller television series, adapted from the 1960 tokusatsu film *The Human Vapor* by Ishirō Honda and Takeshi Kimura. The show is a Japanese–South Korean co-production, with a screenplay by Yeon Sang-ho and Ryu Yong-jae, direction by Shinzo Katayama, and a cast including Shun Oguri, Yu Aoi, Suzu Hirose, Kento Hayashi, Uta, and Yutaka Takenouchi. It represents the first joint project between Netflix and Toho, premiering on Netflix on July 2, 2026.
The story follows a mysterious figure who can transform into gas, calling himself the Human Vapor. After killing a professor live on television, he declares his intent to eliminate everyone connected to an organization known as the White Center. Detective Kenji Okamoto is assigned to investigate the murders. Meanwhile, his ex-girlfriend, reporter Kyoko Kono, launches her own inquiry into the White Center’s link to a meteorite crash that occurred 27 years earlier, and the subsequent cleanup of the contaminated site. Their separate investigations eventually converge as they uncover a larger conspiracy.
The cast includes Shun Oguri as Kenji Okamoto, a police detective reinstated after a suspension to probe the Human Vapor’s televised murder; Yu Aoi as Kyoko Kono, a reporter and Kenji’s former love interest who teams up with him; Suzu Hirose and Kento Hayashi as sibling livestreamers Kaho and Fujita Fujikawa, who run a horror web series; Uta as Ren Tsutsumida, the Human Vapor, a victim of White Center experiments seeking revenge; and Yutaka Takenouchi as Yasutoshi Mori, a former yakuza turned company president and White Center leader.
